Ode to an Ancient Cat

Ode to an Ancient Cat
By Diane Neil, High Desert Branch

Cat, you are the death of me!
I’ve many things to do –
Yet here before the fire I sit
contemplating you.

You lie as limp as a pile of rags.
Where is your erstwhile strength?
Your floppy paws (claws in)
yawn out their lazy length.

Where’s the kitten that you were?
Where the high-powered pounce?
Where are the meows of yesteryear?
Whither your boundless bounce?

Cat, I wish you would arise,
or at least let a lively mew.
So I could uncurl from this comfy couch
and quit copy-catting you.

We proudly announce that
Diane Neil’s “Ode to an Ancient Cat”
recently won third place at the San Bernardino Fair.
